A Seasonal Bell
Not alot been happening here for a while, mainly because I've not been doing anything with the
car. It got a bit chilly, and I've been spending some time draught-proofing and insulating the
garage door, to try to make life a bit more bearable.
A short while ago, when the engine came out, I was on the verge of buying the bellhousing I need
to connect the Zetec SE to the Type 9 gearbox, when one came up on eBay. So I managed to get it for
a good price, seeing as it is brand new. I was also able to get dad to collect it, and it has been
harbouring there for a while.
I now have it in the garage. It is quite light at 4kgs. And doesn't fit very far down the tunnel...

More Extraction
|
First job for today was to continue with extracting the wiring loom - it's not too difficult when
you don't have to worry about putting it back together again. After threading the front light wiring
back through the bulkhead, I ended up cutting the small bundle of wires which went into the
tunnel. I could then feed the rear light wires back through, and remove the fuel pump wire. This
left a birds nest on the garage floor and empty dash area.

Next up I moved to get the fuel pump removed. When I looked a bit closer, I noticed that the pump
is actually held in place by just being tie-wrapped to the panhard rod - whilst I am sure it is
ok, seems a little sub-optimal really. At least it was easy to remove. Turns out it is quite a
nice pump and filter, so they can be carried over onto the rebuilt car.
I then set about removing the fuel tank. I thought this would be nice and easy, but I ended up
having to remove some of the rear suspension to get it out, due to the way the bodywork curves
under at the rear of the car.

Diff Diff And Wiring
Firstly, the Vauxhall engine and associated stuff have now been
collected and are en route to their new owner. I've also found a
home for the gearbox, flywheel and clutch, propshaft, and manifold.
So I've made some further progress in ensuring that I don't end up
with a load of parts piled high. Also during the week, I picked
up another diff. There's been a slight change of tack with regard to
which diff I am going to use. The new one is from a Mk3 MX-5, which
is a 3.7:1 ratio and comes with a Torsen limited slip unit fitted as
standard. I was hoping it might be a bit smaller and lighter than
the Sierra one, but it is actually bigger and heavier! Though I
think I should be able to save some weight in the driveshafts.

I was mostly doing things with the MG today, but had an hour at the
end of the afternoon, where I got the prop extracted from the car.
Then I spent time working on removing the dash panels, and getting
the gauges out from it. This gives much better access to the chassis
wiring loom, which I will return to continue its extraction.
